The aim of the ISOP association is to help people in Costa Rica, with a physical condition requiring medical/therapeutic follow-up, but whose precarious economic situation does not allow it to them.
The Costa Rican Ministry of Education offers public services for children with disabilities attending school, but the therapists are not licensed to manipulate and only do counseling work for teachers with a student with a disability in their class. Due to a lack of economic means, annual visits are irregular and few in number.
Today, ISOP it's: 3 physiotherapists, 1 physical and sports educator, 2 persons in charge of administration and finance, 1 accountant, 1 lawyer.
Currently, Céline Dagron (engineer and administrative volunteer) and myself, Pablo Rojas (physiotherapist, administrative officer and president of the association), are the only two people working on a voluntary basis so that ISOP continues to support the 48 children from the Association. The rest of the professionals are employees of the association, it is necessary to pay for their work.
Today, ISOP accompanies 48 disabled children from the Turrialba region and surrounding areas, including 5 living in the Cabecar indigenous areas in the middle of the primary forest. This, through different programs, adapted to the physical condition of each and its geographical location.
Today, ISOP it's:
- A program of visits to the indigenous zone (Grano de oro / Paso Marcos) including 5 children, whom we visit every 15 days on one same day. A full year of this program costs the association €3,317 (driver, petrol, therapist), for the 5 children followed.
- A hydrotherapy program, which benefits 32 children, divided into several groups spread over the hours of each Tuesday, at the "el Balneario" de Turrialba swimming pool. A full year of this program costs the association €4,973 (entry to the swimming pool, therapist), for the 32 children followed.
- An individualized physiotherapy program in Turrialba, for cases with more delicate physical conditions, taking place at their home once a week for the 6 children following the program. A full year of this program costs the association €2,905 (therapist) for the 6 children followed.
- An individualized physiotherapy program out of Turrialba, for 5 children, each living at least 1 hour away from the town. We visit each of them twice a month. A full year of this program costs the association €2,079 (driver, petrol, therapist), for the 5 children followed.
A full year of physiotherapy services for these 48 children represents a total of €13,274. Or €277 per child per year.
Today, the economic situation of the association does not allow us to be able to provide, until the end of the year, the physiotherapy services offered to these children in need. It is for this same reason that we are looking for solutions, and ask for your help to be able to continue this great adventure that is ISOP and bring quality of life to the children who make our programs vibrate. Every gesture counts, as our motto reminds us: "POCO ES MUCHO", what is little for you, can mean a lot for another!
You are also all welcome in Costa Rica, if you wish to come and volunteer with us and meet the children of ISOP!
