By Mid April 2022, historic floods have devastated the city of Durban and its region, KwaZulu-Natal. So far, 448 human loss and enormous casualties to inhabitations and public infrastructures are to be deplored.
The current situation is of course the hardest to handle.
Populations have a very limited access to power and running water, such as medics and other elementary goods. As many only survive economically via informal jobs, the survival of big portions of the poor inhabitants of the region - in a country where inequalities, wealth gap and violence are already amongst the highest on the African Continent and in the all world.
But Durban and the KZN region is of course not be reduced to this dramatic conditions and current situation. It is, amongst many richness, the birthplace of a music, dance and cultural movement named GQOM, which is infused and an actualisation of trap music, South African house, techno, dubstep… as well as traditional music and dance.
Among some of the genius creators of Gqom genre is our friend DJ Producer Menzi.
While having the opportunity to craft his art, to tour through the African continent and to Europe via his Uganda based label Hakuna Kulala and Nyege Nyege festival, Menzi is still a totally precarious car mecanic who need to hustle every day in order to feed the 12 members of his family and to grant education to his daughter and his siblings.
The emergency he, his family and his community are living at the moment is totally real, so that’s why he need our help.
Any contribution you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
In case you want to discover his music and eventually support him by buying his music, his album Impazamo is to be listened and purchased on Bandcamp:
